![]() The Application of MEDI-REHATEK Spinal Orthosis III 3, Methods of Measurement 1) Measurement of scoliosis angle (FIG. 2) There are many ways to measure scoliosis angle.Currently the general measurement method is Cobb angle method. The measurements of X-ray is positive phase of standard full-length of spine. Step 1: Determine the end of vertebrae of the scoliosis. Upper and lower end of vertebra refers to the maximum inclination of concave side of scoliosis. The intervertebral space of convex side of scoliosis is wider, and the first vertebra where the intervertebral space of concave side becomes widening which is not considered as part of the inclination, and then the adjacent vertebra is considered to be the end vertebra of inclination. Step 2: Draw a line along the edge of upper end vertebra, also draw a line along the edge of lower end vertebra. In this regard make a vertical line each for the two horizontal lines. Step 3: The intersection angle of two vertical lines is Cobb angle. Note: For larger curve of scoliosis, the intersection angle of two horizontal lines also is equivalent to the Cobb angle. That is how we can get the measurement of scoliosis angle. 2) Measurements of Rotation Angle (Fig. 3) Another measure of the magnitude of inclination relies on the condition of rotation on cross section. In general, the greater the rotation is, the more severe scoliosis is. The most commonly used method of checking rotation angle of spine created by Nash and Moe is image technique of pedicle. It is divided into five degrees according to the positional relationship between the pedicle and lateral of vertebral body on positive X-ray film, : Degree 0 saying symmetry pedicle ; Degree I saying that the pedicle of convex side moves toward the midline, but not beyond the first grid, pedicle of concave side becomes smaller; Degree II saying that pedicle of convex side has been moved to the second grid, the pedicle of concave side disappears;Degree III saying that pedicle of convex side has moved to the center, pedicle of concave side disappears ; Degree IV saying that pedicle of convex side is beyond the center line, close to the concave side. 3)Determine skeletal maturity of the patient: Risser sign (Fig. 4) Skeletal maturity is very important in assessing the progress and treatment decisions of scoliosis. It is usually assessed by iliac epiphysis, saying Risser sign. Risser proposed that the growth of endplate of vertebra is consistent with the ossification of iliac crest in 1958.
